Reliance Industries and the Adani Group are sprawling conglomerates worth over $200 billion each, with established businesses in sectors ranging from fossil fuels and clean energy to media and technology. As a result, these three men — Modi, Ambani and Adani — are playing a fundamental role in shaping the economic superpower India will become in the coming decades. Both Adani and Ambani have become key allies as the country embarks on this revolution. “India cannot grow rich before it becomes old on the back of a few big firms like Adani or Ambani,” he said.

With opulent graves but no written records, the empire and its people have remained largely in the shadows of history until recently. But a landmark April 2022 study involving ancient DNA taken from the graves of the Avar elite shed light on the empire’s far-flung origins. A tiny sample is drilled from a bone at the ancient DNA laboratory at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany. In the case of men, researchers found two partners in 10 cases, three partners in four cases and four partners in one case. “Polygamy (having multiple marriage partners), serial monogamous marriages and extramarital relations are all possible explanations,” she said.

New Delhi/London CNN —In just a few days, India will commence the world’s largest democratic election. So, is the hype around Modi’s India, which remains a largely impoverished country, justified? The world’s largest biometric database has also helped the government save millions by reducing corruption in welfare initiatives. Domestic investors, both retail and institutional, have been driving India’s stock market to unprecedented peaks. Still, India’s economy, much like its democracy, is far from perfect.

CNN —German soccer authorities will redesign the number “4” on the country’s national jerseys amid claims it resembles a logo used by Nazi paramilitary units. The DFB unveiled Germany’s new uniforms, which will be worn by both men’s and women’s teams, in late March. Less than two weeks ago, the DFB announced that Nike will take over from Adidas as the German soccer team’s official shirt supplier from 2027. Adidas has produced the country’s jerseys since the 1950s, during which time the men’s team (either as Germany or West Germany) has claimed four World Cups. The logo was so widely used at the time that some German typewriters were produced with a stylized “SS” key.

In general, it's pretty easy to make decent potatoes — but here are my best tips for making truly great ones. Be mindful when choosing the kind of potato you're cooking withWaxy potatoes, like red potatoes, are best boiled or sliced and roasted since they maintain their shape and texture. Buying potatoes with dirt is no big deal, but avoid green spotsWhen buying potatoes, a little dirt is totally fine. Salt potatoes to upgrade their textureLove it or hate it, salt is the key to making a lot of things taste great. Guido Mieth | Stone | Getty ImagesAs millions of Americans start filing returns, experts warn that last year's tax withholding errors could trigger an unexpected bill. The IRS requires tax payments throughout the year and many workers do that via automatic employer paycheck withholdings. By contrast, you may see a tax bill if you didn't pay enough. For filers with multiple jobs, withholding issues are "always a surprise," according to certified financial planner JoAnn May, principal at Forest Asset Management in Berwyn, Illinois. If you didn't adjust your withholding to reflect your new single status, you may not pay enough taxes during the year.

ROME (Reuters) - Italy will provide the admiral in command of a European Union Red Sea naval mission to protect ships from attacks by Yemen's Houthi militia, Defence Minister Guido Crosetto said on Friday. "The European Union today asked Italy to supply the Force Commander for the Aspides Operation in the Red Sea," Crosetto said in a statement. The EU's foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said on Wednesday he hoped the mission, to be named Aspides - meaning "protector" in ancient Greek - could be launched on Feb. 17. Its mandate would be to protect commercial ships and intercept attacks, but not take part in strikes against the Houthis, Borrell said. ROME (Reuters) - Ongoing disruption in the Red Sea threatens to destabilise Italy's economy and marginalise ports in southern Europe, Italy's defence minister said on Thursday. "From a geopolitical perspective, the continuing of this situation could lead to the marginalisation of ports on the Mediterranean Sea," Defence Minister Guido Crosetto told lawmakers from parliament's defence committees. "Not only does it threaten the security of navigation but also (Italy's) economic stability". The minister said that commercial traffic through the Suez Canal -- which he estimated to represent some 40% of Italy's total maritime trade -- had dropped by 38% by the last week of 2023. Navigation times increased by 10-12 days and costs increased almost five-fold, he added.

AdvertisementWhen healthy plants received warning messages from damaged plants, they lit up like a light bulb, which the scientists recorded using a special microscope that detects certain chemicals as light. These compounds enter healthy plants through pore-like holes called stomata, and travel throughout the leaf, spreading the information around the plant. Scientists think healthy plants can use warning signals from damaged plants for defense. The scientists separated healthy plants from damaged plants but chemicals were able to pass between the plants via an air pump. There is no border between animals and plants," Toyota said.

Nobody made this point better than the Tuscan humanist Poggio Bracciolini. Indeed, the rich merchants who were the main “victims” of forced loans were also the rulers of patrician republics and understood they were contributing their private resources to the public good. These loans proved to be a poor investment, as the interest tended to become negative in real terms because of hyperinflation. Of course, historically, wars provide the best possible motivation to ask citizens to contribute more: either with their blood or with their cash. For example, this was explicit in the fiscal package introduced in the United States as part of Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal.

And now Ben Hammou faces another blow as the German government moves to end pandemic-era tax breaks for the hospitality industry. The fiscally hawkish FDP party, which has control of the finance ministry in the three-way ruling coalition, backs letting the tax break expire, calculating that it would cost 3.3 billion euros ($3.5 billion) to keep it going in 2024. Many restaurants operate on tight margins, which makes them quite sensitive to tax increases. In Spain, Italy and France, the VAT on restaurants is at 10%, considerably lower than the expected 19% in Germany from 2024. The question is whether German restaurants are still struggling or have recovered well enough from the pandemic to withstand having the tax break removed, according to Tomas Dvorak, senior economist at Oxford Economics.

Of course the one that spoiled that streak was the agonising one-point semi-final defeat by South Africa, but it is still an England team unrecognisable in confidence and execution from the one that endured a dismal August warm-up campaign.
